2024 Peanut Butter Wars

The tension is rising. There will be battles and at least a couple of unforeseen skirmishes. Each participant and all the teams are using peanut products to oil the cogs in their emerging war machines. Each group will need to make sure that its peanut butter production is high. Every organization has the same goal: to become battle ready. The wars begins on Monday, July 1 and end on Monday August 5th at midnight. On Tuesday, Aug. 6 we will declare the 2024 #peanutbutterwars champion and present the prestigious Peanut Trophy shortly afterwards. There will be an award for any church or group that can break the record for weight collected set by Community Lutheran Church at 4696 pounds.

The Peanut Butter Wars is a fun-raiser and food drive designed to combat food insecurity. It is a mostly friendly competition in which churches, groups, or individuals compete to see who can donate the most peanut butter by weight. Financial donations can be given to our pantry and other initiatives to serve more people with fresh and healthy nutrient-rich foods. Our goal is to raise $25,000 and 10,000 pounds of peanut butter to battle hunger in the Las Vegas metro area. Joining the war is easy:

  1. Let me know you or your organization would like to join the war by emailing martin@lssnv.org.
  2. Collect and donate pounds of peanut butter for LSSN. We will weigh every jar and get a precise tally of how many pounds you or your group donate.
  3. You can give financial donations on this page. Every dollar donated will count as three pounds of peanut butter towards your total poundage. You can also see the overall tally of how much peanut butter has been donated. All donations will be designated towards LSSN’s efforts to fight food insecurity.

Please spread the word to any church, business, or group that you think would like to join the war! Also make sure to check out the wars on www.facebook.com/lssnv

As you are collecting peanut butter and joining the wars, make sure to tag #peanutbutterwars. There may be some additional #peanutbutterwars challenges as we battle against hunger. Stay tuned!

Thank you to every donation whether it is a single jar of peanut butter or a $10,000 donation towards bringing nutrient rich foods to people who need it!

2023 Peanut Butter Wars

The current reigning Peanut Butter Wars Champion is New Song Church who collected 16,235 pounds last summer. We shall see if they will once again acquire the highly coveted peanut trophy this summer! Community Lutheran collected 9616 pounds and collected about 10 carloads of peanut butter—thankfully LSSN now has a refrigerated food truck to transport peanut butter 😁. We also had fantastic showings from Good Samaritan, Christ the Servant, Holy Spirit Lutheran, Good Samaritan at the Lakes, Christ Lutheran in Boulder City, Grace Lutheran in Henderson, St. Andrew, and New Journey.

7 Ways LSSN Fights Food Insecurity

  1. We often serve 100 families per day at our pantry on Boulder Highway. We have two other pantry sites including Holy Spirit Lutheran Church and Anthem Wellness Center.
  2. We have Mobile Markets that serve about 200-300 households in a single day—usually at a local church on a Saturday. We are starting two new locations to be held at Christ the Servant Lutheran and Good Samaritan at the Lakes.
  3. We work together with the Department of Juvenile Justice to distribute food parcels to at-risk teenagers to three locations. Jesus Martinez, our Director of Programs, shared one story of a boy who got into trouble to begin with for stealing formula for a younger sibling.
  4. We have been using our refrigerated truck to pick up fresh food twice a week from Albertson’s through Three Square’s Food Rescue Program.
  5. We serve low-income seniors a hot nutritious meal every weekday at two locations as well as giving them go bags for sustenance over the weekend.
  6. We sign everyone we can up for SNAP benefits (formerly called food stamps). Individuals and families with low incomes can really benefit from SNAP.
  7. Our SNAP Educators are conducting nutrition classes and cooking.
